The primary objective of the Respiratory Protection Course is to assure the safe and proper use of respirators by employees to in order to prevent exposure to harmful airborne contaminants such as dust, fog, fumes, mists, gases, smokes, vapors, or sprays, thus preventing occupational illness.
This course is broken down into 3 parts.
You must score at least 60% to pass this course.
Alert employees to the types of respiratory hazards they may be exposed to.
Train employees to prevent occupational illnesses that may be linked to your respiratory system.
Provide employees with the necessary equipment and proper testing to ensure they can safely perform their job.
The respiratory system is a network of organs and tissues that help you breathe. It includes your airways, lungs, and blood vessels. The muscles that power your lungs are also part of the respiratory system. These parts work together to move oxygen throughout the body and clean out waste gases like carbon dioxide.
An exposure assessment evaluates the nature and magnitude of exposures to respiratory hazards in the workplace.
Respiratory hazards can include chemicals, poor air quality, and aerosolized contaminants. For example, the most common exposure assessment used is “Air Sampling”.
Air sampling is the most reliable approach for determining how much and what type of contaminants are present.
Air sampling data is then utilized to determine the most appropriate methods for protecting our employees.
Central Pro Services provides its employees with the “6000 Series Respirator” manufactured by 3M, the global leader in safety equipment.
This safety equipment is OSHA certified and deemed fit to keep employees in our line of work as safe, when properly utilized.
Respirators in this series are available in half-mask and full-mask versions.
All employees that wear a respirator must complete a medical evaluation questionnaire on an annual basis.
The OSHA Respirator Medical Evaluation Questionnaire is designed to identify general medical conditions that could place a worker at risk of serious medical consequences if a respirator is not used.
Each employee must be fit tested before use of a respirator in the workplace and must be re-tested at least every 12 months to make sure that the respirator they use still fits them. Employees should also be tested if they experience any of the following:
The employee must always be fit tested with the specific make, model, style, and size of respirator that they will be using.
Qualitative Fit Testing is a pass/fail test method that uses your sense of taste or smell, or your reaction to an irritant in order to detect leakage into the respirator facepiece.
Whether the respirator passes or fails the test is based simply on you detecting leakage of the test substance into your facepiece. There are four qualitative fit test substances accepted by OSHA:
In order to pass this test, your respirator must form a perfect seal with your face so that you do not smell or taste the testing substance.
